Did you know summer is the season of self-care?

After the rush and roar of the Isle of Man TT races, we’re all ready for more rays and relaxation. More kicking back and basking in the glow. More lie-ins after later nights.

With longer, brighter days, we can all reap immunity-boosting vitamin D rewards as we spend more hours soaking up the sun. The fairer weather also encourages us to get out and move about, enjoying the invigorating fresh Manx air and spectacular countryside and coast — a balm for our minds, as well as our bodies.

But with ‘feel-good’ seemingly freely available, it’s important to remember some general wellness basics in the summer months.

Too bright for “goodnight”?

Even with our Island’s rapidly changeable climate, there are two things you’re guaranteed to get more of in the summertime: heat and light.

While there’s no doubt that both can be great for your mood, they can also play havoc with your sleep pattern. After a while of tossing and turning in a room that’s just too bright and warm, you can wave goodbye to that sunshine mood-boost!

Fortunately, there are a couple of tweaks you can make to your sleep sanctuary that will bring back the zzz factor. Let’s start with your bed.

Whether you prefer springs, memory foam, or a bit of both, the breathable fabrics and materials used in newer modern mattresses can help enormously with temperature regulation, absorbing and releasing body heat to give you a more relaxed night’s sleep. If you’re struggling in a smaller bed, it might also be worth sizing up to a king or super-king size. (Trust us, it’s been the saviour of many relationships!)

Cover with a lighter tog duvet or sheet for those evenings when the mercury’s hitting the highs.

Too bright for “goodnight”? It’s a perfect time to change up your window treatments. Thicker curtains and blackout blinds will give you the shade you need while decreasing heat levels. Opt for lighter colours, as they tend to reflect sunlight, keeping your space cooler. Made-to-measure curtains and blinds tailored perfectly to the size of your windows can also stop those pesky rays from sneaking into your bedroom through nooks, crannies, and around the edges.

Finally, have a think about your regular sleep pattern. While it can be beneficial to try and maintain it and stick to a schedule, you may also want to fill the longer days with more activities. If you’re looking forward to extra hours spent being a social butterfly, why not plan in regular siestas? If you can top up your sleep around your schedule, you’ll be able to maintain your energy levels whilst giving your body the rest it needs.

As much as we love to welcome the sunshine, you can have too much of a good thing.

From dehydration to heatstroke, the effects of hot weather can be extremely harmful, especially to older people and those with long-term health conditions.

Avoiding too much physical activity and keeping out of the sun from 11am – 3pm can help you avoid the worst of the heat. Drink plenty of cold water, eat cooler foods, and wear light clothing and a hat.

If you’re sitting this one out in the comfort of your own home, dim and shady is the way to go! Keep your windows closed during the day, but open them at night to let the cooler air in. It can also be a good idea to close your blinds and curtains to keep the temperature down in rooms that get a lot of sunlight.

A Greener Lifestyle: Forever 100% Recycled Fabrics

We need to talk about plastic.

Since Leo Baekeland created the first fully synthetic plastic in 1907 — the tough as old boots ‘Bakelite’ — we’ve been hooked. We’ve been obsessed. We just can’t get enough. From car parts to ketchup bottles, toothbrushes to t-shirts, we’ve used it in everything.

And why not? It’s light. It’s cheap. It’s just so incredibly versatile.

Are you sitting comfortably? Chances are it’s thanks to the synthetic plastic fibres that form a large proportion of your comfy seat, giving your rear a cosy treat. Did you grab a pre-work coffee this morning? Along with the often entirely plastic lid, disposable takeaway coffee cups are completely coated in the stuff to prevent leakages. But maybe you’re more of a ‘good strong cuppa’ person? Surprise! There might be plastic in your teabags.

Being so useful and flexible means it’s almost impossible to get through your day without coming into contact with some form of plastic. But just because it’s everywhere doesn’t mean it’s good for us — or for our planet.

The plastic problem.

By now, we’re all facing up to reality: as a species, we have a serious plastic problem, and our reliance on it is causing untold damage to the world around us.

Sometimes it gets recycled. Most of the time it ends up in landfill. When it’s dumped it just sits there, taking anywhere between 400 to 1,000 years to break down and decompose, all the while releasing harmful toxins into soil and surrounding water sources.

Then there’s our oceans. We’ll never forget the mix of unrelenting sadness, horror and anger we felt watching the BBC’s Blue Planet II; dolphins playing with discarded plastic bags, the heartbreaking footage of a mother pilot whale mourn the death of her calf — poisoned as a result of plastic pollution.

The numbers are simply staggering: there are over 5 trillion pieces of plastic littering the world’s oceans, and it is estimated that up to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic end up in the sea every year.

Turning the tide.

Though the statistics are grim, there’s a lot of room for hope.

Thanks to the huge efforts of conservationists and campaigners — along with a helpful push from “The Blue Planet Effect”; Sir David Attenborough’s stark warnings having been seen, heard and listened to by more than 14 million viewers — many individuals, households and businesses have been spurred into action, cracking down on those problem single-use plastics.

Positive change is happening, and we can all do our bit.

Luxuriously soft and extremely hardwearing, the recycled polyester yarns that make up Forever fabrics begin life as a mix of regular recycled plastic bottles, repurposed ocean waste plastics and upcycled cotton garments. Because producing these yarns doesn’t require any petroleum, which would normally be used to create standard ‘new’ polyester, CO2 emissions are reduced by an astonishing 75%.

The yarns are then woven into the gorgeous 100% recycled fabrics that make up our lovely, super comfy, eco-friendly sofas.

They’re also brilliantly easy to clean, meaning you don’t have to buy any harmful chemicals to keep them looking and feeling at their very best.
